So you're starting fashion school this year...

maniquín fashion school estudiar moda

In Mexico is time to go back to school, and the rest of the world may do that soon too, and I thought about sharing a little of my experience about starting fashion school. While in every school is completely different, there are some things that don't change, and stereotypes you shouldn't believe. Here's a list of all things you should know:
  1. You just signed for hard work. You will learn theoretical and practical things, which will give you tons of work and sleepless nights. Is not like just reading a book and writing a paper, is working materials with your hands until you make it work. But you will love it.
  2. In general, there isn't beauty sleep in college. And you will have to be super organized to be able to dress well. You'll see.
  3. People will tell you that your career choice is terrible. A thousand times. It isn't the most conservative path, and it is true it's hard to work in this industry, but tough people can do anything.
  4. Your classes are a lot cooler than those of the rest of your friends. While they talk about physics and boring stuff, you'll be analyzing Yves Saint Laurent's dresses.
  5. Your bedroom will never be clean again. You will not be able to get rid of the papers, patterns, fabrics...
  6. When you learn to sew, is important to ask any question you may have. Ask and keep working until what you do is no less than excellent. All the things you don't learn when you should will give you a lot of frustrations later.
  7. Some teachers say Internet doesn't help in fashion. That you should look for everything in books. Books are important, but the truth is that news, seasonal stuff and general fashion culture is found in magazines and Internet. If I would have listened to that I wouldn't have this blog.
  8. And talking about culture, do you even know who is Raf Simons and what is the meaning behind Lanvin's logo? Knowing about fashion, designers, brands, editors, models, etc. is basic. Otherwise you show indifference towards our industry, if you like fashion, you know about fashion. (And also, learn how to write and pronounce the names correctly).
  9. Get your material. Fashion is expensive. You don't only have to get books, but also a machine, curves, paper, tissue, and a long etcetera.
  10. Know what you're learning and how to apply it, starting by the difference between styling and modeling.

There are also some stereotypes you'll have to break:
  1. Fashion students are vain. We are creative, which means more human. Which means, we care and are sensible about everything. And no, we don't care about what a famous cat eats.
  2. Fashion students aren't smart. We just are, we have an opinion about everything. For the sake of our reputation, keep reading the journal and visiting the library. And if you think wRitinGg liKe thISs* is fun, don't worry about enrolling in college. Also, read good journals. Without that you won't be respected, anywhere.
So here are the basics, try to do your research and be aware that school is just the start, but the experience is the key.

Note: not all the linked articles are translated to english, but you can find a translator on the left bar.

  5. Tu recamara no volverá a estar ordenada.

Although Im not studying fashion design, Im studying fashion retail management and I can definitely agree with how you said how we have cooler classes because before I decided to major in fashion retail I went to a university where I majored in history and a lot of my classes were incredibly boring.
